The Abington Area Community Park’s 100 acre landscape includes sublime vistas and recreational facilities for people with all abilities making it the Abington Centerpiece. The AAJRB strives to make the park as universally accessible and inclusive as possible for all to enjoy.. There are certain HC accessible amenities existing at the park now such as: fishing docks, Restrooms, Boundless Playground and picnic tables at the Pavilion. The Park's 2011 General Fundraising Goal is to make a network of Handicapped-Accessible paved pathways and parking spaces, so that those using wheelchairs or who have mobility impairments will be afforded points of access to the facilities and the lakeside trail. Keith Williams is a lifelong wheelchair user who lives in Clarks Green and is the Community Organizer for the Northeast Pa Center for Independent Living. “The park will open new opportunities for area residents with disabilities,” he said. “It will enable us to enjoy the outdoors and socialize with our non-disabled family and friends. |

Earth Camp was a success for the 2010 season and we are looking forward to next year. Below are a few highlights:
On August 17th, we finished painting our clay pieces that we created with our professional guest potter from Burti Pottery Studios, went on a fantastic nature hike with guest visitor, Mr. Michael Freidlin, who is a 7th grade teacher at the middle school and recently came back from two trips to Costa Rica and Panama. Also, one of our counselors, Cherise Santoriello, who is going to college to become a teacher of the deaf, taught use how we compensate with our sensories when our vision is taken away, and also taught us some sign language. August 18th was spent the morning at Birchwood Tennis Facility for three hours of professional tennis instruction from Bill Steege and his staff. This is always a great day! To add to that, we spent the afternoon at the Valley Equestrian 4H Club arena below the middle school. We enjoyed equestrian demonstrations and discussions from two area 4H leaders.
Thursday was our grand finale complete with canoeing, fishing, roasting hot dogs over open pit fires, root beer floats, and a huge water balloon bash! This was one of our favorite days with our campers.
Thank you to all of our special guests: Darin Huggler, Michael Freidlin, Rob Smith, Joe Dorohovech, Clay LaCoe, Margaret Maurer, Paul Flynn, and Alex Hargrove. A special thank you to all the parents who contributed by donating their time, money, and other necessities to help make Earth Camp a success! Also, Earth Camp could not be a reality without the financial support of the following organizations: AEIO & You, Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, and Pennsylvania American Water.

Walk the Lake’s proposed ADA-accessible scenic walking trail surrounding Eston Wilson Lake will enhance the Abington Area Community Park as a destination for environmental education, recreation and fitness for visitors of all physical abilities. Currently, only the able-bodied have access to the water’s edge of the lake, and there is no defined path to encourage full lake access.
