Master Site Plan Created by Abington Area Joint Recreation Board a Reality Responding to a survey of Abington residents, the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board (AAJRB) has designed a summer-long calendar of events for all ages. Most activities will take place at the Abington Area Community Park, which is in the midst of a makeover. "The park isn't just getting an aesthetic and functional makeover," said 2008 Summer Program Chair Ashley Goff. "It's also getting a social makeover, as we put out the virtual welcome mat for residents and visitors to enjoy time there." Planned events include: 2008 Summer Camp. Open to students entering grades five through eight, the six-week day camp will meet at the Abington Area Community Park on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 am until noon. Experienced supervisors will oversee the planned educational and recreational activities, which were planned by Abington Heights School District teachers' aides. Tuition is $75. Registration forms are available at the Clarks Summit Borough Building and on the AAJRB website (www.aajrb.com). Abington Area Golf Camp. Conducted in partnership with Summit Hills Golf Club, the camp will provide basic golf instruction for ages 10 and older. Group lessons will be taught at the club by Summit Hills PGA Golf Pro Gene Moore. Two three-week sessions are offered. One begins July 15, and the second, August 5. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to noon. Additional times are available; please call for details. Campers will receive free and discounted access to Summit Hills as a special benefit. To register or obtain more information, please call Summit Hills Golf Club, 586-4427. Thursdays in the Park. Each week, summer camp will conclude with a special activity on Thursdays. At noon, when camp concludes for the day, the event will be open to the public. Please watch newspapers for details or visit the AAJRB website (www.aajrb.com). Picnics in the Park. With its partners, AAJRB will conduct two old-fashioned Picnics in the Park, featuring food vendors and live entertainment. The first is slated for July 12 from noon until dusk, and the second will take place August 30. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and plan to have fun.
"Members of the AAJRB spent years developing a master site plan for the Abington Area Community Park, and we're eager to see our vision become a reality. By maximizing our natural resources and giving residents what they want, the park will become a destination for socialization and recreation for people of all ages," noted AAJRB Chair Bill Risse. Both Goff and Risse encourage the public to enjoy the park year-round with hiking, picnicking, fishing, exercising, reading, and meeting for informal sports. "As we move forward with our master site plan, AAJRB members will be able to offer even more incentives to visit this beautiful area, such as a toddler play area, covered pavilions, and more," Risse added. Goff agreed. "Our tagline for park materials is, 'Park it on Winola Road.' And there has never been a better time to do that."
