Abington Area Community Park will host the 3rd Annual “Forever Young Kids’ Fishing Derby”  on Saturday, June 9th, 9A-Noon.

The Fishing Derby honors the memory of Lawrence E. “Bud” Young and his significant contributions to the Abington community.

Participants under the age of 16 are welcome to join this free event. Prizes will be awarded (from noon to 1PM) by age group and for the child who catches the first 13” fish.  See rules.

 Hot dogs and a drink for participants will be provided.  Permitted bait will also be  provided for registrants. There will be a prize raffle, 50/50 raffle, and donation jars; all proceeds will benefit the beautification and maintenance of this family-oriented park.

  

  We are asking the community to make a donation to make this a successful event.

Sponsorships of $250 will be recognized on individual signs placed strategically in the park during the weeks prior to the Derby as well as on the back of the fishing derby tee shirts.  Donors of $100 will be listed on the back of the fishing derby tee shirts.  Please send your donation to the “Forever Young Kids’ Fishing Derby” c/o Abington Area Joint Recreation Board, 304 S. Derby Rules
 1). No running or horseplay near the water. 2). Judge's decisions are final. 3) Contestants must use only the bait provided by the derby sponsors. 4) Adults may assist younger children with casting and retrieving but child must be present and "hands on" fishing pole when retrieving line. 
5) Derby is catch and release. All fish must be immediately returned to the water after being measured. 6). Trout will be eligible for all awards. Derby is for pan fish only. Pan fish include perch, catfish, sunfish, bluegill, calico, and shiners, plus trout. Non-pan fish such as trout will be measured/weighed for the ‘Catch of the Day’and the "Bud Award."  NO Bass fish will qualify for awards.
 
7.) Prizes Awarded:
 
  • For the largest fish in the 3 age groups.
  • The heaviest non-pan fish caught will receive the prize for “catch of the day” and will not be eligible for any other prize or award.
  • The first fish caught to measure 13", or the fish closest to 13” (if no fish meets the 13 inch requirement) will receive the ‘Bud Award’, but will not be eligible for any other prize or award.
 
8). No littering. Please remove all trash to the trash containers at the park. 9). Shoreline fishing only. No wading or boats will be allowed.
