Lackawanna County's grant program for local parks will add $45,000 to the funds available to improve Abington Community. A variety of state and local grants total more than $500,000 that will greatly improve Abington Community Park in the next 18 months. Senator Bob Mellow secured a $30,000 grant and State Rep. Jim Wanzsac secured 3 grants worth $39,000. Those funds were used as the local match to help secure the county funds. Announced in February was a $200,000 grant from casio funds raised in Monroe County. See the Casino Grant Announcement here. Lackawanna County Commissioners Corey O'Brien, Mike Washo and AJ Munchak also announced in February that the County will build a $250,000 Boundless Playground in the Abington Area Community Park. These funds will be combined to build a pavillion and support facilities for the Playground, and revamp the 'international soccer field' at the park. Abington Youth Soccer will donate an additional $60,000 toward the soccer field upgrade. The AAJRB is continuing to research and apply for additional state, local and foundation grants. Recently the IRS reviewed the AAJRB and confirmed that its is a 501-c-3 organization, meaning that contributions are fully deductible for tax purposes. The PA Dept. of Education recently approved the AAJRB's Earth Camp as an educational project eligible to receive incentive funding. |
