The Abington Township Supervisors made local history of sorts by becoming the first local municipality to pledge non-member funding to the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board. That's great news! We have been informed that South Abington Township, Glenburn Township, Clarks Summit and Clarks Green Borough also approved our funding request from member municipalities. During public hearings and media coverage during the budget process numerous parties suggested that other Abington area municipalities step forward to help support regional recreation, and the Abington Township announcement shows that citizens and elected leaders were listening. The announcement from Abington Townhip follows: Bill Risse, ChairmanAbington Area Joint Recreation BoardAbington Community ParkDear Mr. Risse, At the last Abington Township Supervisor’s meeting held on Monday, December 8, 2008, the Abington Township Board of Supervisors approved a donation of $ 1,000.00 to help fund the Abington Community Park from our 2009 budget. Due to financial commitments to recreational facilities and programs within our own community, this was the amount that we could see clear to donate to your facility at this time.
Abington Township supports the Waverly Community House and its various programs which are used and enjoyed by residents throughout the Abington area. Included in these facilities, at the Waverly Community House, are two tennis courts, a children’s playground, the Waverly memorial library and a summer camp program. We also maintain a 15 acre municipal park which has a baseball field, a 1½ mile walking trail and picnic tables, all of which are available for use by all residents living in the Abington area. Planned for 2009, in the municipal park, is a pavilion, additional picnic tables, grills and trail benches. During the past three years we have planted 22 trees on the Waverly Community House property and 125 trees on the municipal park property.
All of these facilities are funded by the Township of Abington at a considerable expense to the taxpayers of this municipality. With the increased costs associated with providing essential services to our residents and the maintenance of township owned facilities, our budget is stretched to the limit.
We will strive to continue to provide a donation to your facility as available funds permit. For the supervisors, William H. White Abington Township Manager
Efforts to secure funding were supported by the 2008 State of the Park Report. The report gives you a good idea of all the hard work and recent success stories at your park. We ask area residents to help maintain recreation funding remain a priority, and take the time to ask for support of the AAJRB when talking to local Council people and Supervisors. We thank the Elected Municipal leaders of the now five towns that support regional recreation, and we will work to see that number grow in 2009! |
