Ice Changes Quickly in March!!!!! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bill Risse

Ice on Eston Wilson Lake can change quickly in March -- so never go on the ice alone and have a cell phone to call 911.

Then use rope, ladder, sled or even long branches to help someone out of the water in case of emergency.  There is a wooden ladder by the canoe rack for rescue.

AZEK Building Products is pleased to take part in the Walk the Lake Project at Abington Park.  “It is very gratifying to be able to help improve access to Eston Wilson Lake with our AZEK Deck material,” said Jim Gross, VP-National Sales.

“With Abington Park right in AZEK’s backyard, we are confident that the AZEK walkway will add beauty to the project and enhance the lake experience for visitors to the park.”  He noted the AZEK® Deck trail is in a rich, brown color called Sedona®, which blends in nicely with the woodland lake setting and features low-maintenance for the park management.

According to AAJRB officials, the new handicapped-accessible trail  allows for healthy initiatives, environmental education, access for exploration of the nature trails and recreational enrichment of the community.

Eston Wilson Lake is a 13 acre fishing lake stocked with largemouth bass, perch, rainbow trout and catfish.

Lighted Turf Field Open PDF Print E-mail

The Turf Field at Hillside Park is ready for action, as substantial completion of construction has been met. That means that teams and residents can begin to use the synthetic surface field.
A field reservation system is being phased in during a 'soft-opening' timeframe and a link to TURF FIELD is found on the left side of this Home Page. Click HERE to read the provisional Policy for Turf Field Reservation and access.
Clarks Green Borough has been instrumental in securing hundreds of thousands of dollars in park improvements, by partnering with the AAJRB as the technical applicant for 3 different state grants.
In addition local youth soccer, football and cheerleading organizations have donated more than $300,000 toward the lighted turf field and handicpped access project.
While the project centerpiece is the lighted field, significant improvements to interior pathways and parking have created all-accessible pathways and access as part of the project. Now park visitors can travel on paved walkways from the Boundless Playground and Rest Rooms to the Turf Field, the Handicapped Fishing Docks, Pavilion and Lakeside Boardwalk.

2012 Park Report - A True Regional Park PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bill R Risse

PA State and Abington area public officials envisioned something apart from a typical municipal facility when they collaborated in 1972 to set aside land and provide base funding for a multi-municipal recreation area. They challenged a growing and progressive population to experiment with a management model that was not vested in any one town – but rather one triggering leadership from local residents and long-term support from the townships and boroughs of the Abingtons. Four decades later the concept has taken shape in the form of a vibrant recreation area that blends revenue sources from 5 Abington municipalities, Lackawanna County, the Commonwealth of PA, foundation grants and donations, and funds from diverse park users.

Click HERE to see the State of the Park Report 2011 noting the many points of progress from last year, thanks to our generous, active and committed community members!

A special thanks to graphic artist Marijo Carey DePaola and Woodlawn Graphics who donated the design for the AAJRB State of the Park Report!

A Tree Transformed PDF Print E-mail
Written by Diane Farnan Vietz

Check out the 'transformed tree' at Abington Area Community Park

First Mike Gockley of Clarks Green topped a lakeside dead pine tree and removed the dead branches. Next, amidst the changing leaves of October, Kevin Treat, the local wood carver, spent a few days using his chainsaw. He worked on a boom lift to carve,  treat and stain a few woodland creatures into the tree.

There is a sentinel Eagle, Owl and Bear which make this a standout park feature as well as a marker for the start of the developing lakeside trail to be completed in spring. This trailhead marker should last about two decades to reflect art in nature.

Funds for the tree carving project were provided by a Lackawanna County Arts grant awarded to Clarks Green Borough and Waverly Township on behalf of the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board; the Abington Area Community Classroom; Leela Baikadi and friends; Clarks Summit UPS Store owner, Kip Conforti and Mike Sheruda, Down to Earth Rental Equipment.

Samples of Treat’s work can be seen on his website www.sawptician.com.

Centennial Family Fun Day in the Park PDF Print E-mail
Written by Diane Farnan Vietz
Wednesday, 18 May 2011 10:01

Why was Centennial Family Fun Day in The Park begun?

The Clarks Summit Centennial Committee joined with the 2nd Annual Forever Young Kids Fishing Derby to  add another free family event celebrating their town’s 100th.  This began the Centennial Family Fun Day planned for June 11th, 1 PM til dusk at Abington Area Community Park.

Dennis Martin Vice-Chair of the Clarks Summit's Centennial Planning Committee commented that “the event will celebrate our town’s heritage and is designed for the entire community to enjoy together.”

Event Chairman, Clyde Rosencrance, commented, "There’s a lot that the Abington Area Community Park has to offer.  This event was put together with the idea of showcasing just what that is, and at no cost to the community. Since we started the planning, many others in the community have offered to help out and offer activities/events.”

What can a visitor to this event expect? "We hope the park and its lake become the stage for our  residents to connect with family and friends while relaxing outdoors. At the same time we designed a day where all can have a chance to eat good food, go fishing, play games, share in demonstrations, shows, music, a petting zoo and so much more!" said Linda Young, event Vice-Chairwoman.
