Lighting the Playing Fields |
| | The AAJRB is responding to a community need for more playing field access with the addition of field lighting, enhancing the quality of our available sports facility. The illumination of a full soccer field will widen the community's recreational opportunity by extending the playing season and hours. At its December 29th meeting, Clarks Green awarded a contract to Joyce Electrical Co., Eynon, PA,. According to outgoing council member and president, Marie King, “Joyce Electric won the contract out of a field of seven contractors who bid on the extensive lighting project with a bid of $108,000. |

2012 Park Report - A True Regional Park |
| PA State and Abington area public officials envisioned something apart from a typical municipal facility when they collaborated in 1972 to set aside land and provide base funding for a multi-municipal recreation area. They challenged a growing and progressive population to experiment with a management model that was not vested in any one town – but rather one triggering leadership from local residents and long-term support from the townships and boroughs of the Abingtons. Four decades later the concept has taken shape in the form of a vibrant recreation area that blends revenue sources from 5 Abington municipalities, Lackawanna County, the Commonwealth of PA, foundation grants and donations, and funds from diverse park users. Click HERE to see the State of the Park Report 2011 noting the many points of progress from last year, thanks to our generous, active and committed community members! A special thanks to graphic artist Marijo Carey DePaola and Woodlawn Graphics who donated the design for the AAJRB State of the Park Report! |

| | Check out the 'transformed tree' at Abington Area Community Park. First Mike Gockley of Clarks Green topped a lakeside dead pine tree and removed the dead branches. Next, amidst the changing leaves of October, Kevin Treat, the local wood carver, spent a few days using his chainsaw. He worked on a boom lift to carve, treat and stain a few woodland creatures into the tree. There is a sentinel Eagle, Owl and Bear which make this a standout park feature as well as a marker for the start of the developing lakeside trail to be completed in spring. This trailhead marker should last about two decades to reflect art in nature. Funds for the tree carving project were provided by a Lackawanna County Arts grant awarded to Clarks Green Borough and Waverly Township on behalf of the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board; the Abington Area Community Classroom; Leela Baikadi and friends; Clarks Summit UPS Store owner, Kip Conforti and Mike Sheruda, Down to Earth Rental Equipment. Samples of Treat’s work can be seen on his website www.sawptician.com. For more information, please contact the AAJRB via email at:
